Drivewear®, Activated by Transitions®, drove away with two OLA Awards of Excellence this year. Drivewear received the win for the “Best in Lens Materials” category as well as in the “Best in Marketing” category for The Art & Science of Drivewear, Education Tour and Marketing Materials.
Younger Optics, manufacturer of Drivewear lenses, has made a variety of appealing and informative marketing materials available to the lab and dispenser. Younger also teamed up with Transitions to host a series of seminars across the nation to educate Eye Care Professionals about the unprecedented, revolutionary technology of the Drivewear lens as well as the incredible marketing opportunity it’s brought to the optical industry.
|
David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics, points out that he has never before seen a product take off like Drivewear. “We are very honored and pleased to have received both these awards, and I am proud of everyone at Younger and at Transitions who has helped to make Drivewear a success,” said Rips. “Drivewear fills a huge niche market – drivers – and we have gotten a lot of positive feedback from both ECPs and consumers who have tried the Drivewear lens. The optical industry has greeted Drivewear with great enthusiasm and we are looking forward to making Drivewear available in more materials and styles in the near future.”
Designed specifically to address the unique demands of the driving task, Drivewear is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car, which allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision and provide protection from blinding glare. The Drivewear lens is currently available in Single Vision, IMAGE® Progressive and Finished Plano Hard Resin. Winners were announced last month in Indianapolis, Indiana. Younger Optics has won 15 OLA Awards of Excellence since 1987 for lens innovation, technology and creativity.

(TORRANCE, CA — July 2007)
Irving Rips, founder of Younger Optics, passed away Monday morning, July 30th. Irving was born on November 1st 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended Creighton University where he studied philosophy. Irving got started in the optical industry at a very early age by fusing glass bifocals in his uncle’s factory.
In 1954, Irving had a better idea; He wanted to design a bifocal without the line. Months of hard work in his garage yielded the world’s first seamless bifocal. This lens made people look “Younger”. Younger Optics was formed in 1955 to make the lens that set the stage for many innovations to follow. Irving continued to invent a series of new products that the industry had not seen before.
|
Early aspherics, progressives, high index, UV lenses, and other unique plastic lens products all resulted from Irving’s extraordinary creativity and determination. In recognition of Irving’s contributions to the optical industry he was awarded the OLA lifetime achievement award in 1992.
As Younger Optics has grown from those early years into a very successful corporation, Irving continued to innovate and help the staff wherever he could. His life was filled with the quest for knowledge. He collected rare books, read everything he could, and applied the knowledge in unpredictable ways. Irving set a standard for innovation and determination that will live on at Younger.
|
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace (Bebe) Rips and three children, Ted, David, and Debby, and 8 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Mount Sinai Cemetery 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 1st at 11:00am.

The ever-growing line of informational and POP materials for the Drivewear® lens now includes lenticular cards – a new selling tool that Younger Optics believes will be useful to ECPs in explaining how this innovative new driving lens works. The lenticular card is about the size of a business card and made of a tough and durable plastic material. As the card is tilted forward and back, the image on the card changes so that the viewer sees how the Drivewear lens color changes in reaction to differing light conditions. The cards are perfect for display on a dispensing table and an ideal demonstrator for patients to take home with them and share with friends and family. A clear, hard plastic card holder is also available through Younger Optics.

(CZECH REPUBLIC, EUROPE — March 2007) Younger Optics has been recognized as a leader in lens innovation, technology and creativity at the 13th International Fair for Eye Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology held in the Czech Republic February 23-25 this year. Younger’s Drivewear® exhibit was honored with the top award in the “spectacle lens” category (producer Younger Optics, exhibitor Omega Optix). “We are honored to receive this award, and I am very proud of our development team for gaining this accomplishment,” said Igor Loshak, Managing Director of Younger Optics Europe. “Drivewear is one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in our industry – we really created a whole new category in lenses. |
The TOP OPTA Competition awards one product as “best exhibit” in each of the following categories: spectacle lenses, contact lenses, frames (including sunglasses), and equipment and technologies for eye optics and ophthalmology. The competition is held in the BRNO Exhibition Centre at the OPTA International Fair, which prides itself in not just presenting the top fashion spectacle frames, glasses and contact lenses, or technology and equipment, but also in serving as a centre of education, offering numerous specialized lectures and seminars for optical professionals. Younger Optics has recently expanded the availability of their innovative new line by introducing Drivewear IMAGE® progressives. “Since we released Drivewear lenses, the number-one product request has been for a progressive. We are pleased to fulfill that request with the new Drivewear Image progressive,” according to David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics.
The award-winning IMAGE progressive has been rated favorably among recent independent studies. This is in part because IMAGE boasts one of the widest distortion free distance zones in the industry, a key advantage for the driving task. From the dashboard to the road ahead, IMAGE provides excellent viewing at near, far and intermediate distances, and can accommodate Rx ranges of -8D to +6D, with 1.00 – 3.00 add powers.

Younger Optics has recently expanded the availability of their single vision line by introducing Drivewear finished planos. “We believe this enhanced range of product offerings will give the laboratory and practitioner greater convenience and flexibility in recommending Drivewear lenses,” said Johann Van Zyl, National Sales Manager at Younger Optics. “This represents Younger’s continued commitment towards expanding the Drivewear availability. Drivewear has really gained momentum in the Rx market, and now it is also available to patients who need a good driving lens but don’t wear prescription eyewear.”
|
Drivewear lenses uniquely combine Transitions™ Photochromic Technology and NuPolar® polarization to create a new category of lens designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task. Drivewear is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car, allowing Drivewear to change from high contrast green/ yellow to copper to dark reddish brown (depending on lighting conditions) in order to enhance the driver’s vision. Younger has been nominated for Drivewear®, a lens made possible through the cooperation of Younger Optics (manufacturer of NuPolar® Polarized Lenses) and Transitions Optical, Inc. and designed specifically to address the unique demands of the driving task. This is Younger Optics’ first nomination for the Silmo Award, and Younger Europe’s first-ever award nomination since their establishment in 2003.

Younger Optics has designed a brand new website www.drivewearlens.com in conjunction with the launch of their highly anticipated and innovative new lens Drivewear™. Following the style of Younger’s “Art & Science” product brochures, the website is written and illustrated with clear, concise language and graphics that Younger believes will be appealing and informative to both the ECP as well as to the consumer.
Designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task, Drivewear is the first polarized photochromic lens to darken behind the windshield of a car which allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision. And since Drivewear lenses are Activated by Transitions™, wearers can be assured that their lenses are enhanced with superior and patented Transitions™ Photochromic Technology to automatically optimize visual performance in variable light conditions and to help protect eye health.
|
Drivewear lenses also utilize NuPolar®, the world’s leading polarized Rx technology, to provide protection from blinding glare. “Only polarized lenses provide protection from blinding glare, and that is absolutely essential while driving a car,” said David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics.
By visiting www.drivewearlens.com, viewers can learn about the history of vision and eyewear, the driving task, the technologies behind the Drivewear lens, and how Drivewear lenses were designed to improve visual acuity in varying lighting conditions. The site also provides technical specifications, downloads, wearer testimonials and much more.
Worldwide, there are nearly 1 billion drivers and the number is growing every year. Nearly everyone of driving age that walks into an optical shop is an ideal candidate and can benefit from the improved vision delivered by Drivewear lenses.

(TORRANCE, CA — September 2006) Younger Optics is unveiling its most anticipated and innovative new product since NuPolar® polarized lenses – a new lens that Younger has aptly named Drivewear®. Designed specifically to meet the unique visual demands of the driving task, Drivewear lenses offer the consumer far more than just polarized photochromic eyewear.
“As with all of our products, I wanted to create a product that would meet a specific visual need that isn’t being met in today’s market. Drivewear’s combination of technologies is so advanced and novel that multiple patents have been filed on this invention and a whole new lens category is introduced. Although driving has become an integral part of our daily lives, driving is one of the most challenging and difficult activities a person can engage in. The truth is, we need all the visual help we can get.” according to David Rips, President and CEO of Younger Optics.
Drivewear® lenses uniquely combine two of the most advanced technologies found in the eyeglass industry today: Transitions™ Photochromic Technology and NuPolar® polarization.
DRIVEWEAR is the first polarized photochromic lens to DARKEN BEHIND THE WINDSHIELD of a car. These lenses are Activated by Transitions™ and use advanced dyes to respond to visible light in addition to UV light. This allows Drivewear lenses to change color based on current driving conditions in order to enhance the driver’s vision.
Drivewear lenses also utilize NuPolar®, the world’s leading polarized Rx technology, to provide protection from blinding glare. “Only polarized lenses provide protection from blinding glare, and that is absolutely essential while driving a car,” said Mr. Rips.

In low light, the lenses take on a green/ yellow color which provides high contrast and is designed to minimize glare and maximize useful light information reaching the eye. In daylight (behind the windshield of a car) they change to a copper color which reduces glare and excess visual light and provides good traffic signal recognition, highlighting reds and greens.
Finally, in outdoor conditions, they become a dark reddish-brown color, providing maximum comfort in high light conditions by filtering excess light so that the eye does not become saturated. And because they are Activated by Transitions™, you will have the security of knowing your lenses block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. In virtually every daylight driving situation, Drivewear lenses provide optimal visual comfort and safety.
“Since Drivewear® lenses are Activated by Transitions™, wearers can be assured that their lenses are enhanced with superior and patented Transitions™ Photochromic Technology to automatically optimize visual performance in variable light conditions and to help protect eye health and well-being for the future,” said Dave Cole, general manager of the Americas, Transitions Optical, Inc. “Transitions is happy to partner with Younger Optics to develop new special purpose products like Drivewear that fall outside our core line of Transitions® Lenses, which meet the everyday needs of patients.”
Worldwide, there are nearly 1 billion drivers and the number is growing every year. Nearly everyone of driving age that walks into an optical shop is an ideal candidate and can benefit from the improved vision delivered by Drivewear lenses.
